Hello,
It’s that time of year again and the 2016 Bridge Building Competition (23 Annual!) takes place on Saturday, April 9th, 2016 at Porter Creek Secondary School.

We need volunteers on set-up day (Friday the 8th) and Saturday. We’d need you on Friday anytime from 2pm until 6pm. Any donation of time would be greatly appreciated. On Friday we accept bridges from the builders, weigh them, photograph them, mark the narratives and set up the testing stations.

On Saturday we’d need you from 12:30 pm until about 5 pm. That is the day of mass destruction. Volunteers are asked to be there to receive instructions at 12:30 pm and the competition will begin at 1 pm. Drinks and lunch will be provided for volunteers.

We will go out for refreshments after the work is done on both days.

If you can help us, please reply to Phil Borgel’s home email address: nap@northwestel.net as soon as possible. We’re looking for about 6 people on Friday and approximately 15 people on Saturday.

Don't forget, if you are an engineer, these hours count towards volunteer time for your Continuing Professional Development! It's a lot of fun, and the kids really enjoy it too.  If you have any questions, please let me know.

Regards,

APEY’s Outreach Committee & Science Adventures

Long Ago Yukon: The Righteous Wrath of the Dene-Yeniseian Eagle-Slayer: Asian-Athabaskan Cultural Ties Demonstrated in Myth and Lore

3/1/2016

Long Ago Yukon will be hosting together with the Beringia Centre the third presentation in its SKYPE series ‘Encounters with First Peoples’ on Saturday, March 5th at 1 p.m. at the Beringia Centre.

Dr. Joseph A. P. Wilson, Assistant Editor, Journal for the Study of Religion, Nature and Culture, and Instructor at Fairfield University in Connecticut will speak via SKYPE on "The Righteous Wrath of the Dene-Yeniseian Eagle-Slayer: Asian-Athabaskan Cultural Ties Demonstrated in Myth and Lore."

Background
Dr. Wilson spoke last year during the first Long Ago Yukon SKYPE speaker series. His intriguing perspective on the migration of Athabaskan peoples from Asia into the Americas lead to a second invitation to continue his conversation with interested Yukoners this year.

Journal for the Study of Religion, Nature and Culture focuses on a (ReligionandNature.com) continuing  inquiry into the complex relationships between human beings, their religious beliefs and practices, and their earthly habitats. It features the work and projects of an international and interdisciplinary community of scholars investigating the nexus of religion, nature and culture, including the subfield sometimes called religion and ecology.

Public comment period for SARA Management Plan on Short-eared Owl (due April 23, 2016)

3/1/2016

The proposed Management Plan for Short-eared Owl in Canada was posted on the Species at Risk Public Registry on February 23, 2016, for a 60-day public comment period which ends on April 23, 2016. Comments received from provinces, territories, wildlife management boards, and Aboriginal governments across Canada were considered in the drafting of the current version of the Management Plan (attached). Following the 60-day public comment period, the Management Plan will be revised as needed and then posted on the Species at Risk Public Registry as a final Management Plan.  Note that as a species of special concern, there are no general prohibitions or critical habitat requirements for this species.

Given the broad distribution of this species across Canada, the Management Plan is national in scope and the current draft has been prepared by Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Canadian Wildlife Service with the input of provinces, territories, wildlife management boards, and Aboriginal governments across Canada, as per federal Species at Risk Act (SARA) requirements. You can read the proposed Management Plan and comment at: http://www.sararegistry.gc.ca/document/default_e.cfm?documentID=2876 .

Note that in addition to the general public, comments are also being solicited at this time from all Yukon First Nations and Renewable Resource Councils within the species’ range, as well as the Yukon Fish and Wildlife Management Board and Wildlife Management Advisory Council (North Slope).

Comments may be submitted directly on the Species at Risk Public Registry at http://www.sararegistry.gc.ca/document/default_e.cfm?documentID=2876 or they may be provided directly to Saleem Dar at saleem.dar@canada.ca.
