On Monday June 6th, the Yukon Astronomical Society will be hosting James Edgar, National President of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC), to present the lecture, Synthesis of Elements in Stars. This will be combined with the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada: Yukon Centre inauguration, all to be held at the Yukon College. That's right... the Yukon Astronomical Society has officially joined the ranks of the RASC, and has become its 29th Centre! This event will be FREE and open to the public.
The 90 minute evening presentation will begin with the inauguration ceremony at 7:00 PM in the courtyard (next to C-Wing) of the Yukon College, and the presentation will begin shortly after at 7:30 PM in room A2402 at Yukon College (see map at http://yukonastronomicalsociety.com/our-programs/meetings/).
It is also fitting that the YAS will have some solar telescopes out that evening, so that the attendees may have a look at our closest star... the sun. Please contact the Yukon Astronomical Society (yukonastronomicalsociety@gmail.com) if you have any questions regarding this presentation.
Lecture:
Synthesis of Elements in Stars
All stars are born from hydrogen and during their lives they produce elements through nuclear fusion. High-mass stars end their lives as supernovae, perhaps the most cataclysmic events in the universe, producing the heavy elements. This talk merges James Edgar’s love of woodworking, astronomy, genealogy, chemistry, physics, and poetry from Northern Ireland, although the main thrust of the presentation is about how elements form within stars.
